This book examines the nuances of multiple images-cinema, TV, computer, and smart phones-that feed into the making of a new Indian narrative and showcase an India that is very different from the unilinear notion that used to exist a few decades ago. It elaborates on the critical role of the impressions formed in redefining how the Indian Diaspora is imagined and received in the West, which in turn impacts everyday experiences of the Indians living there. Building on his earlier book India through the Western Lens: Creating National Images in Film (SAGE 1999), which focused primarily on films, Mitra expands his latest study to new media.
we all know very well, this is not a native Indian instrument. It originated in Europe and was brought to India, sometime in the late 18th century, by British Missionaries, to accompany them in their religious services. The early Harmonium had foot pedals for pumping the bellows. But Indian musicians were more comfortable playing, sitting on the ground. So according to their needs, the Harmonium took an Indianised form, such as the disappearance of the pedals and instead, a hand pumped bellows was attached to it.
Interpretation of a love triangle in Ijaazat - an evocative exploration of the strength and fragility of human relationships - was years ahead of its time. This book examines that interpretation to show how, thematically, the film was possibly Gulzar most daring. It highlights how his skill as a storyteller - at once romantic and realistic - is exemplified by his complex characters. Contributing to that understanding is how the film &s power also derived hugely from its sublime musical score by R.D. Barman.
